PROJECT U.S.E. RECEIVES NOURISHING NEWARK GRANT AWARD TO SUPPORT HEALTHY FOOD ACCESS AND COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT

Newark, NJ – September 29, 2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

————-

Project U.S.E. is proud to announce that we are part of a group of 14 recipient organizations selected to receive funding through the Nourishing Newark Community Grants program.  The program is designed to provide an investment supporting community-based organizations in Newark working to combat hunger and food insecurity resulting from challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the city’s official press release for the grant program, Mayor Ras J. Baraka noted that, “These grants will make a major difference in the lives of residents, improving their wellbeing by ending food deserts, creating community gardens that provide fresh, healthy food to families in need, and strengthening neighborhood economies. I congratulate each organization on earning this grant award. They will keep moving Newark forward.”

Project U.S.E. is receiving $150,000 in support of our Newark Healthy Food Access and Empowerment Project, which will provide community education, gardening workshops, and food distribution to expand healthy food access and empowerment for community residents.  The project will be carried out with anchor partner Jonathan Rose Companies through a community garden build-out and expansion at their Grace West Manor community in Newark.

The program will also give Newark youth a chance to gain paid employment experience, exposure to career opportunities related to healthy food access, and training and leadership development as future local advocates on this vitally important issue.

The American Rescue Plan is the source of funds for this initial round of community grant funds. Awards under this round range from $10,000 to $350,000 to Newark organizations and coalitions. The program is administered by the City’s Office of Sustainability.
