Park Works

Youth Work Experience Program

In partnership with the Trust for Public Land, Park Works provides Newark high school students valuable work experience in the field of landscaping, educational advancement in the arts and sciences, and development of character and community stewardship. This program affords Newark youth meaningful job opportunities, which are scarce yet crucial in building productive members of the community and work force. Students are employed as landscapers from 9 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday, for six weeks during the summer. These young men and women learn and apply the hard skills required to create and maintain beautiful garden beds in a clean, safe public space. The physical tasks are grounds to explore how plants grow and the human impact on the natural world, including key components of biology, horticulture, and environmental science. Over the course of the program, the youth become stewards of the parks, working as a team to positively build their community and develop as individuals.
